Expressive Arts at Ridgewood
Our Expressive Arts curriculum brings together Art, Music and Drama to provide learners with meaningful opportunities to communicate, create, explore and express themselves.
Learning is adapted through our Pre-formal, Semi-formal and Formal pathways. Art, Music and Drama are taught as distinct disciplines, while meaningful links are made across the wider curriculum.
Expressive Arts gives learners different ways to communicate and demonstrate understanding. Sound, movement, gesture, mark-making, colour, rhythm, performance, AAC and sensory response can all provide meaningful forms of expression and participation.
Through Art, learners explore colour, line, shape, texture, materials and creative techniques while encountering the work of a range of artists and designers.
Through Music, learners develop awareness of sound, rhythm, pulse, instruments, listening, composition and performance.
Through Drama, learners develop communication, imagination, storytelling, movement, interaction and performance.
For Pre-formal learners, Expressive Arts provides purposeful opportunities to develop engagement, anticipation, choice, cause and effect, shared attention and intentional communication. Sensory experiences are used to support meaningful participation in the arts.
Ultimately, Expressive Arts supports confidence, creativity, communication, wellbeing and self-expression, enabling learners to participate in and enjoy creative and cultural experiences both in school and beyond.
