Food Technology

Food Technology at Ridgewood

Our Food Technology curriculum places life skills, independence, health and Preparation for Adulthood at its heart.

Food preparation is introduced within Year 7 Design Technology before becoming a discrete curriculum focus from Years 8–11. This reflects the needs and future priorities of our learners and recognises that being able to make choices about food, prepare meals and drinks, shop for ingredients and develop safe and healthy routines are fundamental skills for adult life.

Learning is practical, purposeful and relevant. Through regular opportunities to revisit and apply skills, learners progressively develop the knowledge, confidence and practical competence they need to participate in food preparation and everyday food-related routines with increasing independence.

Food learning extends beyond the classroom. Wherever appropriate, learners apply their skills through shopping, community visits, enterprise, work-related learning, Preparation for Adulthood and experiences within the wider school environment.

Our Food Technology curriculum provides learners with essential skills for life. Pupils develop knowledge and skills in food preparation, cooking, nutrition, hygiene, safety, shopping, budgeting and making informed choices.

Learners are supported to understand the relationship between food, health and wellbeing and recognise that preferences, culture, religion, allergies, dietary requirements and individual needs can influence the food choices people make.

Shopping and planning form an important part of learning. Pupils develop skills in making shopping lists, identifying ingredients, comparing products and prices, recognising value for money, using payment methods and, where appropriate, shopping safely in stores and online.

For learners with profound and multiple learning disabilities or complex sensory and physical needs, meaningful food education may include sensory exploration, anticipation of familiar routines, communicating preferences, making choices, participating in stages of preparation and using adapted equipment to increase control and independence.

Ultimately, our Food Technology curriculum aims to give every learner the greatest possible confidence, competence, choice and independence with food, enabling them to participate more fully in their home, community and adult life.
