Mathematics at Ridgewood

Our Mathematics curriculum is informed by White Rose Maths and carefully adapted to ensure that mathematical learning is ambitious, accessible and meaningful for every learner.

Practical experiences, manipulatives and real-life application are central to our approach. Learners develop mathematical understanding through concrete experiences, before progressing towards pictorial and abstract representations where appropriate.

Mathematical learning is carefully sequenced and regularly revisited so that pupils can build secure knowledge, practise skills in different contexts and apply their understanding across the wider curriculum and everyday life.

At Ridgewood, Mathematics helps learners to make sense of the world around them and develop the skills they need to participate with increasing confidence and independence.

Our curriculum develops understanding across number, calculation, shape, space, measure, time, money, pattern, data and problem-solving.

Learners explore mathematical concepts through practical experiences, investigation and problem-solving. They are encouraged to notice patterns, make choices, predict, compare, estimate, reason and find solutions.

Functional Mathematics is an important part of our curriculum. Learners apply their skills in real-life contexts including shopping, budgeting, handling money, telling the time, measuring, cooking, travel, work-related learning and Preparation for Adulthood.

For learners with profound and multiple learning disabilities or complex sensory needs, early mathematical development may include cause and effect, anticipation, pattern, quantity, shape, position, movement and changes within the environment.

Ultimately, we aim to give every learner the mathematical knowledge, practical skills and confidence they need to make decisions, solve problems and participate as independently as possible in education, employment, community life and adulthood.
