Physical Education

Physical Education at Ridgewood

Our Physical Education curriculum recognises the important relationship between physical development, movement, sensory regulation, emotional wellbeing, independence and participation.

Learners access a broad range of sports, physical activities and movement experiences adapted to their individual cognitive, communication, sensory and physical needs. For some learners, this includes specialist and therapeutic approaches such as Rebound Therapy, sensory integration activities and sensory circuits.

We recognise that some pupils benefit from a more active and personalised approach to support engagement, regulation and readiness to learn. Purposeful physical activity may therefore be used across the school day and wider curriculum alongside each learner’s core PE entitlement.

Through meaningful and accessible experiences, learners develop movement, coordination, strength, balance, body awareness and physical confidence. PE also provides opportunities to develop communication, independence, teamwork, resilience, turn-taking and enjoyment.

For learners with profound and multiple learning disabilities or complex physical needs, PE may include supported movement, changes of position, sensory exploration, body awareness, anticipation, cause and effect and participation in shared physical experiences.

Learners are encouraged to discover physical activities they enjoy and can continue to access beyond school. Through community sport, swimming, leisure activities and active recreation, we aim to develop the confidence and skills needed to participate in healthy and active adult lives.

Ultimately, PE supports learners to grow physically and emotionally, enhance their wellbeing, build positive relationships and develop a positive relationship with movement and physical activity that can continue throughout adulthood.
