Religious Education

Religious Education at Ridgewood

Religious Education is informed by the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education, adapted as far as practicable to meet the developmental, communication, sensory and learning needs of our pupils.

Our RE curriculum follows a spiral approach. Learners revisit religions, beliefs, worldviews and important concepts over time, enabling them to build knowledge, make connections and deepen their understanding from their individual starting points.

RE Today resources support teacher subject knowledge, curriculum planning and the selection of high-quality, age-respectful resources. These are carefully adapted to ensure learning remains meaningful, accessible and appropriately challenging.

Learning is brought to life through stories, artefacts, music, food, celebrations, places of worship, visitors, visits, discussion, creative activities and sensory experiences.

At Ridgewood, Religious Education gives learners meaningful opportunities to explore religions, beliefs and worldviews while developing a greater understanding of themselves, other people and the communities around them.

Through the study of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism, learners encounter beliefs, traditions, celebrations, stories, places, symbols and practices that are important in people’s lives. They also begin to recognise that people may hold religious, non-religious and different worldviews.

RE is about more than learning facts about religion. Learners explore concepts such as identity, belonging, community, celebration, kindness, compassion, respect, responsibility and meaning.

Through practical, experiential and sensory learning, pupils are supported to celebrate differences, discover similarities and build positive relationships with others.

For learners with profound and multiple learning disabilities or complex sensory needs, meaningful RE may include experiencing and responding to music, light, colour, scent, artefacts, stories, celebrations and places; developing anticipation and recognition; expressing preferences; making choices; and sharing experiences with others.

Ultimately, our RE curriculum aims to help learners develop a stronger sense of identity, belonging and respect for others, preparing them to participate confidently and respectfully within their community and the diverse society of modern Britain.

Ridgewood respects the rights of parents/carers to withdraw their children from assemblies and RE lessons/activities. If you wish to withdraw your child, please contact the office in the first instance.
